Baby Acne
Many babies are born with what is called baby acne. Although a new mother may panic to see this on her newborn, the truth is, this common condition is nothing to worry about at all.
Baby acne consists of small bumps, usually white heads, which may or may not be engulfed by irritated red skin. Baby acne is prevalent on babies’ backs and faces. Many people may confuse Baby acne with milia, which, although similar to baby acne, are simply small red bumps that appear on the babies’ faces.
What is the cause of baby acne? Studies have shown that teen, adolescent, and adult acne can be attributed to the constant changing of hormones. It is hard to believe that hormones can be the culprit of baby acne as well. The truth is, hormones play a major part in the development of baby acne. Plenty of hormones are passed to the baby through the mother’s placenta.
How do you treat baby acne? Well, most sensible parents would not attempt to use typical adolescent and adult acne medications on a baby’s delicate skin. Unfortunately, all parents may not think sensibly when presented with the problem of baby acne, so here are some tips:
- Be sure to keep your baby’s skin as clean and dry as possible to combat baby acne. The condition is a mild one and should only last a few weeks at most; during these early stages, a baby’s skin is especially sensitive. Babies drool and spit up frequently, and it is important, especially for those babies who suffer from baby acne, to clean the skin when needed.
- Most babies’ skin can be irritated due to strong laundry detergents or bathing soaps. This is especially true of those who suffer from baby acne. If your infant’s skin becomes irritated, try switching to a milder detergent or soap.
